Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Bjj Gis
Best BJJ Gis: Elite Quality You Can Wear
The uniform for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is referred to as a “BJJ Gi”. In judo as well as traditional jiu jitsu along with modern BJJ, we refer to it as a kimono as well. Jiu Jitsu uniform is a lightweight two-piece garment that consists of loose-fitting pants and a jacket that is closed with a cloth belt. There are other forms of martial arts that use the gi but they all have their differences, and for a reason. BJJ gi is generally more durable than any other gi because in BJJ there is constant grabbing and pulling. Brazilian BJJ gi is designed to be more form-fitting than most because it restricts your opponent from being able to grab on to you.
When you're buying bjj gi, you’re not just buying an outfit, you’re buying a piece of equipment. So when purchasing one, you have to make sure it's quality, especially since you're going to be spending a lot of time rolling, grappling, and sweating. It’s going to be your ExoSkin, so choose wisely.
Elite Sports Gis are constructed out of the highest quality materials, featuring 60% canvas cotton and 40% polyester, these rugged gi’s are designed to take the most abuse you can throw at them. FAQ
1. How to Select a BJJ Gi?
A gi is the term for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform worn during training and competitions. When selecting a gi, it is important to consider fitment, the IBJJF-approved sizing, and colors. A true-to-size gi ensures comfort and flexibility on the mats, improving athletic performance. The bottom of the gi top should reach your thighs, the sleeves should reach the waist, the bottom of the pants should rest just above the ankles, and the belt should not exceed a width of 5 cm. Oversized or loose gis can look unprofessional and hinder movement.
Use the four-finger test to check whether the gi’s sleeves are the right length. Extend your arm, bend four fingers backward, and try to touch your wrist. If the sleeves do not reach your fingers, your gi will not be considered IBJJF-approved. While you may be allowed to train in academies, you won’t be able to compete at the highest levels.
A good BJJ gi is crafted from high-quality cotton, preferably with a pearl weave. Super thick and tough gis make grappling difficult for the wearer, their training partners, and their opponents. Maintaining your gi is required since torn ones are not allowed at academies or IBJJF tournaments. BJJ gis are also available in a wide range of colors. While training, you can wear a gi of any color unless there is a strict color policy at your BJJ academy. However, if you want to compete in an IBJJF competition, you must wear a white, blue, or black Jiu-Jitsu gi depending on the division you will fight in. Before purchasing a BJJ gi, carefully read the criteria for selecting the perfect BJJ gi for the right occasion.
2. Does Gi Color Matter in BJJ?
The color of the gi only matters when competing at IBJJF competitions because the IBJJF only allows athletes to wear white, blue, or black gis. But while you are training, the color of the gi does not matter. Most BJJ academies allow different gi colors, ranging from military green, yellow, pink, red, brown, gray, and everything in between. When signing up for a BJJ academy, check their gi color policies if they have any.
3. How Should a BJJ Gi Fit?
Like most clothing, it is important to find the right fit to ensure it is comfortable when worn. A BJJ gi should not be too loose nor too tight. When trying on the gi top, check how tight it feels around the torso. The lapels of a comfortably fitting gi will overlap without constricting around your neck. The next area to check for tightness is the sleeves. Your upper body and arms should be able to move freely in a gi. Many athletes choose a tight-fitting gi because they believe it will give them some advantage over their opponents. A tight gi is difficult to grab onto; however, it also limits the wearer’s movements and flexibility.
Check the length of the sleeves by extending your arms straight to the sides or in front of you. If your gi rides up more than 2 cm from your wrist joint, the sleeve length is not IBJJF-approved. As mentioned, the four-finger test is the easiest way to measure the sleeve length.
When buying a gi, it is best to try on it first. But because many high-quality gis are available online, wearers usually don’t get a chance to check how well they fit before buying. In this situation, be sure to consult the size chart. Take your measurements, then refer to the Elite Sports size chart. Many BJJ brands have different sizing scales, but you will find sleeve length, pant length, and measurements for different body types.
For gi pants, they should not fit like your regular pants. For BJJ, you need comfortable pants that allow you to move freely. Test for tightness in the knee area by bending your knees or squatting. In this position, check for any loose material to grab onto. If you feel restricted in your Gi pants, you may have picked the wrong size. The pant hems should reach your ankles. The four-finger test can help you determine the right pant length as well. If your Gi pants are longer and get stuck in your heels as you walk, fold up the pant hems or get a different size.
